What Is Bird Control?
Bird control is the professional management of pest bird populations around homes and commercial properties using deterrents, exclusion, and habitat modification. In Oklahoma City, problem birds include pigeons, European starlings, grackles, house sparrows, and occasionally woodpeckers, chimney swifts, and Canadian geese. These species damage structures, contaminate surfaces with droppings, clog HVAC systems with nesting material, and create health hazards for residents and employees.
Effective bird control requires understanding which species you are dealing with because federal law protects some birds but not others. Pigeons, starlings, grackles, and house sparrows are not federally protected and can be actively managed. Chimney swifts, woodpeckers, and Canadian geese are protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, and only deterrence and exclusion methods are legal during nesting season. Alpha Pest Solutions designs every bird control plan around the species, the property, and the legal requirements.
Signs You Need Bird Control
- Birds roosting on your roof, ledges, signs, HVAC units, or building overhangs
- Heavy bird droppings accumulating on walkways, vehicles, loading docks, or building facades
- Nesting material visible in vents, soffits, HVAC units, or light fixtures
- Birds entering your attic, warehouse, or building interior through open doors or gaps
- Grackle flocks creating noise and mess in parking lots and outdoor dining areas
- Pigeon colonies established on commercial buildings, bridges, or warehouses
- Bird mites found inside your home or business after nest removal or bird departure
- Clogged dryer vents, bathroom vents, or kitchen exhaust vents from nesting material
- Customers or employees complaining about aggressive birds or unsanitary conditions
- Health inspector citations related to bird activity at food service or healthcare facilities
Our Process
- Free inspection. We inspect your property to identify the bird species, roosting locations, nesting sites, entry points, and the extent of droppings and damage. For commercial properties, we assess the impact on operations, compliance, and customer experience.
- Species identification and legal assessment. We identify the species and confirm which control methods are legally permitted. For protected species (chimney swifts, woodpeckers, Canadian geese), we use only deterrence and exclusion methods.
- Exclusion installation. We install physical barriers to prevent birds from roosting and nesting. This includes bird netting over large openings, bird spikes on ledges and signs, vent covers and screens over HVAC penetrations, and gap sealing to prevent attic entry.
- Deterrent placement. Where appropriate, we install visual and auditory deterrents to discourage birds from returning to problem areas. Options include reflective tape, predator decoys, and sonic devices for commercial properties.
- Nest and debris removal. We remove existing nests and nesting material from vents, soffits, HVAC units, and other areas (where legally permitted based on species and season). Nesting material in dryer and bathroom vents is a fire hazard and must be removed.
- Droppings cleanup and sanitization. Bird droppings carry Histoplasma capsulatum (Histoplasmosis), Cryptococcus, Salmonella, and E. coli. We clean and sanitize affected areas with proper respiratory protection.
- HVAC protection. We screen and protect rooftop HVAC units, exhaust vents, and air intakes that birds commonly nest in or around. Nesting material inside HVAC systems blocks airflow and creates fire and air quality hazards.
- Follow-up and maintenance. We return to verify exclusion effectiveness and make adjustments. For commercial accounts, we offer ongoing maintenance programs.
Treatment Options and Plans
Residential bird exclusion. Targeted service for homes with birds nesting in vents, soffits, or attics. Includes vent screening, gap sealing, nest removal, and cleanup. Most residential bird jobs are completed in a single visit.
Commercial bird management program. Comprehensive service for businesses dealing with pigeon colonies, grackle flocks, or sparrow nesting. Includes physical exclusion (netting, spikes), deterrents, scheduled maintenance, cleanup, and documentation for compliance. Customized to your facility.
Vent cleaning and screening. Standalone service to clear nesting material from dryer vents, bathroom exhaust vents, and kitchen vents, then install bird-proof screening. Nesting material in vents is a documented fire hazard.
Bird mite treatment. After birds leave or are excluded, bird mites that fed on the birds migrate into your living or working space. We treat the affected area, the former nesting site, and the migration path. Bird mites cannot reproduce without a bird host, so treatment combined with nest removal resolves the issue.
What to Expect After Bird Control
After exclusion devices are installed, birds may spend 1 to 3 days attempting to access their former roosting and nesting sites. This is normal. Pigeons and sparrows are especially persistent. Once they determine they cannot access the site, they relocate.
After nesting material removal from vents, airflow is immediately restored. We recommend running dryer vents on high for 10 minutes after cleaning to clear any remaining debris.
If bird mites were present, you may see increased mite activity for 1 to 2 weeks after the birds leave as mites migrate in search of a new host. Our treatment eliminates them during this migration period. Bird mites cannot survive or reproduce without a bird host, so the population dies out completely once treatment is applied and the birds are gone.
Is Bird Control Safe for Family and Pets?
Yes. Bird control is primarily a physical service: netting, spikes, screens, and gap sealing. No pesticides are applied to the birds themselves.
Bird mite treatment, when needed, uses the same safe, targeted products we apply for other pest treatments. Interior applications dry within 30 to 60 minutes and are safe for your family and pets once dry.
The primary health hazard comes from bird droppings, not from the control methods. Dried bird droppings can release Histoplasma spores when disturbed. We handle all droppings cleanup with proper respiratory protection and containment protocols. Do not sweep, blow, or pressure wash bird droppings yourself without a respirator.
Why Choose Alpha Pest Solutions?
Legal species knowledge. We know which Oklahoma birds are federally protected and which are not. This determines what control methods are legal and effective. Removing a chimney swift nest during nesting season violates federal law. We navigate these regulations for you.
Evidence-based protocol. We identify the species, assess the situation, and recommend only the control methods that will actually work for your specific problem. If birds are not your issue (sometimes “birds in the attic” turn out to be squirrels or bats), we tell you and recommend the right service.
Commercial expertise. Bird problems on commercial properties affect health code compliance, customer experience, and building maintenance costs. We work with restaurants, retail centers, warehouses, healthcare facilities, and property managers across the OKC metro. We understand the urgency and provide documentation.
Fire hazard awareness. Nesting material in dryer vents, bathroom vents, and HVAC systems is a real fire hazard. We address this as part of every bird control service, not as an afterthought.
Small town relational feel. Big company solutions. Local team, same-day response for urgent situations, and we answer our phone.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are pigeons protected by law?
No. Pigeons (rock doves), European starlings, and house sparrows are invasive species and are not protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. They can be actively managed including removal and exclusion at any time of year. However, chimney swifts, woodpeckers, and Canadian geese are federally protected, and active nests of protected species cannot be disturbed during nesting season.
Can birds damage my HVAC system?
Yes. Birds commonly nest inside rooftop HVAC units, exhaust vents, and air intakes. Nesting material blocks airflow, reduces efficiency, and creates a fire hazard. Droppings inside HVAC systems contaminate the air circulating through your building. We screen and protect HVAC components as part of our bird control service.
What are bird mites and will they bite me?
Bird mites are tiny parasites that live on birds and in their nests. When birds leave or are removed, the mites migrate into your living space looking for a new host. They will bite humans, causing itchy red welts similar to bed bug bites. Bird mites cannot reproduce on human blood, so the population will eventually die without a bird host, but they can be a significant nuisance for several weeks. Professional treatment eliminates them quickly.
Is bird droppings cleanup dangerous?
Yes. Dried bird droppings can harbor Histoplasma capsulatum (which causes Histoplasmosis, a serious respiratory infection), Cryptococcus neoformans, Salmonella, and E. coli. Disturbing dry droppings releases spores and bacteria into the air. Do not sweep, blow, or pressure wash accumulated bird droppings without proper respiratory protection (N95 or P100 respirator). We handle all droppings cleanup with appropriate safety equipment and containment.
How do I keep birds out of my dryer vent?
We install bird-proof vent covers that allow exhaust air to exit but prevent birds from entering and nesting. Standard louvered vent covers often have gaps large enough for sparrows and starlings to enter. We use pest-proof covers with fine mesh or spring-loaded closures specifically designed to exclude birds while maintaining full airflow.
Can you remove a chimney swift from my chimney?
Not during nesting season. Chimney swifts are federally protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. Active nests cannot be disturbed. Once the nesting season ends and the birds have departed (typically by late fall), we can install a chimney cap to prevent them from returning the following year. If chimney swifts are creating a noise or debris issue, we can discuss temporary mitigation while respecting the legal protection.
Do bird spikes hurt birds?
No. Bird spikes are a humane deterrent. The thin, blunt-tipped stainless steel or polycarbonate points make it uncomfortable for birds to land on a surface but do not injure them. Birds simply choose to roost elsewhere. Spikes are one of the most effective and long-lasting deterrent options for ledges, signs, and roof edges.
How do I stop grackles from taking over my parking lot?
Grackle management for commercial properties requires a combination of approaches: removing or reducing food sources (outdoor trash, spilled food, open dumpsters), installing deterrent devices (sonic deterrents, reflective tape), and sometimes netting over specific areas like outdoor dining spaces. Grackles are habitual and persistent. Consistency is key, and professional management produces far better results than occasional DIY attempts.
How quickly can you respond to a bird problem?
Same-day response is available for urgent situations, including birds trapped inside buildings, commercial compliance issues, and fire hazard concerns from vent nesting. Call (405) 977-0678 and describe the situation. We prioritize based on urgency and safety.
Do you offer maintenance programs for commercial bird control?
Yes. Our commercial bird management program includes scheduled inspections, maintenance of exclusion devices, droppings cleanup, and documentation. Frequency is customized to your facility’s needs. Monthly and quarterly programs are the most common for properties with persistent bird pressure.
