What Is Wildlife and Rodent Proofing?

Wildlife and rodent proofing (also called exclusion) is the process of sealing every entry point on your home’s exterior to prevent animals from getting inside. Rather than waiting for an infestation and then trapping or treating, proofing stops the problem before it starts by making your home physically inaccessible to wildlife and rodents.

In Oklahoma, the animals most commonly entering homes through structural gaps are mice (entry gap: the size of a dime), rats (quarter-sized), squirrels (1.5 inches), raccoons (4 inches), bats (3/8 of an inch), snakes (following rodent entry points), and birds (entering through unscreened vents). Every home has potential entry points: gaps in soffits, unsealed utility penetrations, deteriorated fascia, unscreened foundation vents, weep holes, garage door seals, and construction gaps at roof intersections.

Alpha Pest Solutions inspects your entire building envelope, identifies every vulnerability, and seals them using materials that animals cannot chew, push, or claw through. This is the most effective long-term solution for recurring wildlife and rodent problems.

Signs You Need Wildlife and Rodent Proofing

  • You have had rodents, wildlife, or bats in your attic, walls, or crawlspace more than once
  • You hear scratching, running, or chewing sounds in your attic or walls
  • You see daylight through gaps in your soffit, fascia, or roofline from inside the attic
  • Foundation vents are missing screens or have damaged screening
  • Utility penetrations (AC lines, plumbing, electrical, cable) have gaps around them where they enter your home
  • Your garage door does not seal tightly at the bottom or sides
  • You see chew marks, grease marks, or claw marks on exterior wood, siding, or trim
  • Dryer vents, bathroom exhaust vents, or kitchen vents lack pest-proof covers
  • You live near lakes, creeks, wooded areas, or undeveloped land with high wildlife pressure
  • You have had a recent wildlife removal or rodent treatment and want to prevent re-entry

Our Process

  1. Full exterior inspection. We inspect your entire building envelope: roofline, soffits, fascia, gable vents, ridge vents, foundation, crawlspace vents, utility penetrations, garage doors, dryer and bathroom vents, chimney, and every transition point where different building materials meet. We document every gap, crack, or opening that could allow entry.
  2. Interior inspection. We check the attic and crawlspace for signs of current or past animal activity, and we look from the inside for daylight penetration that reveals exterior gaps.
  3. Entry point prioritization. We rank each vulnerability by species risk. A 3/8-inch gap near the roofline is a bat entry. A quarter-sized gap at the foundation is a rat entry. A chewed soffit panel is a squirrel entry. Each gets the appropriate sealing method.
  4. Sealing and exclusion. We seal every identified entry point using materials that resist animal damage:
  • Hardware cloth (galvanized steel mesh): 1/4-inch for rodents, 1/2-inch for wildlife. Used over foundation vents, gable vents, and large openings.
  • Copper mesh: Stuffed into gaps before caulking. Rodents cannot chew through copper.
  • Metal flashing: Covers chewed edges, soffit gaps, and fascia damage.
  • Commercial-grade caulk and sealant: Fills small cracks and gaps at utility penetrations, pipe entries, and AC line entries.
  • Pest-proof vent covers: Replace standard dryer and bathroom vent covers that birds and rodents can enter.
  1. Garage door seal. We install or replace garage door weatherstripping and side seals to close the gap that mice and rats commonly use.
  2. Crawlspace vent screening. We screen or replace all crawlspace vent covers with pest-proof mesh. Open or damaged crawlspace vents are the primary entry point for rodents, snakes, and wildlife into the space beneath your home.
  3. Documentation and follow-up. We document all work with photos and provide a report of every sealed entry point. We return to verify seals are holding and no new entry points have developed.

Treatment Options and Plans

Full-home exclusion. Comprehensive inspection and sealing of every entry point on the entire structure. This is the standard service and provides the highest level of protection. Recommended for any home that has had recurring wildlife or rodent issues.

Targeted exclusion. Sealing specific areas of concern, such as the roofline only (for bat or squirrel issues), the foundation only (for rodent issues), or vents only (for bird issues). Appropriate when a full-home service is not needed or when addressing a specific recent entry.

Post-removal exclusion. After we remove wildlife, rodents, or bats from your home, we seal the entry points they used and inspect for additional vulnerabilities. This is included as part of many wildlife and rodent control services and can be expanded to a full-home exclusion.

Crawlspace exclusion. Focused service for crawlspace-constructed homes. Includes screening all vents, sealing access doors, closing utility penetrations, and addressing any gaps in the crawlspace envelope. Especially important for Oklahoma homes with crawlspaces, which are vulnerable to rodents, snakes, skunks, opossums, and moisture pests.

What to Expect After Proofing

After proofing is complete, your home’s exterior is sealed against animal entry at every identified point. You should see:

No new animal entry. Properly installed exclusion materials (steel mesh, copper, metal flashing) are resistant to chewing, clawing, and pushing. Animals that approach sealed entry points cannot get through.

Reduced pest pressure overall. Sealing gaps and cracks also reduces entry for insects, spiders, and scorpions. Many customers report noticeable reductions in general pest activity after a full exclusion.

Energy efficiency improvement. Sealing gaps in your building envelope reduces air infiltration, which improves heating and cooling efficiency. This is a secondary benefit but a real one, especially for older homes with significant gap issues.

Occasional testing. Animals that previously used an entry point may return and attempt to chew or push through the seal. This is normal. Our materials are selected specifically to resist these attempts. If you notice any damage to sealed areas, contact us and we will repair at no charge during the warranty period.

Is Wildlife and Rodent Proofing Safe for My Home?

Yes. Proofing is a physical construction service, not a chemical treatment. We use materials that are standard in building construction: galvanized steel mesh, copper, metal flashing, and commercial-grade sealant. These materials are weather-resistant, fire-safe, and designed for permanent exterior installation.

We do not seal any ventilation openings completely. Foundation vents are screened with mesh that allows airflow while blocking animals. Dryer vents get pest-proof covers that allow exhaust while preventing entry. Soffit ventilation is maintained. Your home’s ventilation needs are always preserved.

Why Choose Alpha Pest Solutions?

Full-structure approach. We inspect and seal the entire building envelope, not just the obvious spots. Animals find entry points that homeowners miss. Our inspection methodology is systematic and thorough.

Entry point expertise. Mouse: dime-sized gap. Rat: quarter-sized. Squirrel: 1.5 inches. Raccoon: 4 inches. Bat: 3/8 inch. Snake: follows rodent-sized gaps. We know exactly what size gap each species needs and seal accordingly.

Animal-proof materials. We use materials that animals cannot defeat: galvanized steel, copper mesh, metal flashing, and commercial-grade sealant. Standard caulk, foam, and plastic vent covers are not sufficient because rodents and squirrels chew through them. We use professional-grade materials for permanent results.

Evidence-based protocol. We document every entry point, seal each one systematically, and verify the work. No guessing, no shortcuts. If you have had animals removed but they keep coming back, the entry point was missed or improperly sealed. We find and fix it.

Small town relational feel. Big company solutions. Local team, thorough work, warranty-backed results.

Wildlife and Rodent Proofing Throughout the OKC Metro

Oklahoma City. Older homes in Heritage Hills, Mesta Park, Paseo, and Crown Heights have aging soffits, fascia, and foundations with numerous potential entry points. Newer homes in north OKC and suburban developments can also have construction gaps at roof intersections and utility penetrations.

Edmond. Squirrel entry through soffits and fascia is the most common issue. Mature tree canopy across established Edmond neighborhoods provides squirrels with direct roof access.

Norman. Crawlspace homes near OU campus are vulnerable to rodent and wildlife entry. Properties near the Canadian River and Lake Thunderbird see elevated wildlife pressure.

Moore and Midwest City. Rodent entry at foundations and garage doors. Post-storm reconstruction in some areas left gaps that need addressing.

Nichols Hills and The Village. Complex rooflines on large homes create multiple potential entry points. Full exclusion on these properties is more involved but also more valuable given the high property values.

We serve all OKC metro cities including Yukon, Mustang, Bethany, Del City, Choctaw, Piedmont, Blanchard, Newcastle, and Warr Acres.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a full-home exclusion take?

Most residential full-home exclusions are completed in 1 to 2 days depending on the size of the structure, the number of entry points, and accessibility. Large homes with complex rooflines or extensive crawlspace work may take longer. We provide a time estimate during the initial inspection.

Will proofing also keep out insects?

Sealing gaps and cracks significantly reduces insect entry. Many customers notice fewer spiders, scorpions, ants, and other pests after a full exclusion. However, insects can enter through gaps too small for our exclusion materials to address, so proofing complements but does not replace regular pest control service.

What if animals are still inside when you seal the entry points?

We never seal animals inside. If we find evidence of current animal occupancy during the inspection, we remove the animals first using species-appropriate methods (trapping, one-way exclusion, etc.) and then seal the entry points. Sealing animals inside causes them to die in wall voids or find their way into your living space.

Can squirrels chew through the materials you use?

Squirrels can chew through wood, plastic, and even aluminum flashing if it is thin enough. We use galvanized steel mesh (16 gauge or heavier), heavy-gauge metal flashing, and copper mesh, all of which resist squirrel damage. Standard hardware store solutions (foam sealant, plastic vent covers, lightweight aluminum screen) do not hold up to persistent squirrel chewing. That is why we use professional-grade materials.

How do I know all the entry points were found?

Our inspection methodology is systematic: we examine the entire building perimeter at ground level, then the roofline, then the attic from inside, then the crawlspace. We look for existing gaps, previous repair attempts, daylight penetration from inside, and animal evidence (chew marks, grease marks, droppings near openings). We document every finding with photos. Miss rates with a thorough professional inspection are very low.

Is proofing a one-time service or does it need maintenance?

Proofing with proper materials is a long-term solution. Steel mesh, copper, and metal flashing do not degrade quickly. However, home settling, weather exposure, and new construction or remodeling can create new gaps over time. We recommend an annual inspection to verify all seals are intact and identify any new vulnerabilities. Properties with persistent wildlife pressure benefit from annual checks.

Can I do wildlife proofing myself?

You can address some obvious gaps with hardware store materials, but a thorough exclusion requires inspecting the entire building envelope (including the attic from inside and the roofline from outside), identifying every gap down to 3/8-inch (bat entry size), and using materials that resist animal chewing. Most homeowners miss entry points, especially on the roofline and at construction joints. Professional exclusion catches what DIY efforts miss.

Do you warranty the proofing work?

Yes. We warranty all exclusion work against animal re-entry through sealed points. If an animal enters through a point we sealed, we repair it and address the re-entry at no additional charge. Our materials and installation methods are designed for permanent results.

How much does wildlife proofing cost?

Cost depends on the size of the structure, the number of entry points, accessibility, and the materials required. A small home with a few obvious gaps costs less than a large, complex-roofline home with extensive work needed. Call (405) 977-0678 for a free inspection and detailed quote. We assess the full scope before providing a price.

Should I proof my home before or after pest control treatment?

Both can happen simultaneously, but if you have active animals in your attic or walls, they need to be removed first. The ideal sequence is: (1) remove active animals, (2) seal entry points, (3) remediate contamination if needed, (4) begin ongoing pest control. We coordinate all of these services.
