What Is Bat Exclusion?

Bat exclusion is the humane, legal process of removing bats from your home and sealing entry points to prevent them from returning. All bat species in Oklahoma are federally protected, which means they cannot be trapped, poisoned, or killed. The only legal and effective method is exclusion: installing one-way devices that allow bats to leave but not re-enter, then permanently sealing every entry point once the colony has departed.

Oklahoma is home to several bat species that commonly roost in residential attics, wall voids, and soffits. The big brown bat and little brown bat are the most frequent attic invaders in the OKC metro. Mexican free-tailed bats and eastern red bats are also present throughout central Oklahoma. A single bat colony in your attic can number from a handful to several hundred individuals, and they return to the same roost site year after year if not properly excluded.

Critical timing restriction: In Oklahoma, bat exclusion cannot be performed between May 1 and August 15. This is the maternity season when flightless pups are present in the roost. Excluding adults during this window traps pups inside, where they die and create a far worse problem. Alpha Pest Solutions schedules all bat exclusion work outside this window.

Signs You Need Bat Exclusion

  • Bats seen flying in or out of your roofline, soffit, or gable vents at dusk
  • Scratching, squeaking, or chittering sounds in the attic or walls, especially at dusk and dawn
  • Dark staining or grease marks around small gaps in your roofline, soffit, or fascia where bats enter
  • Bat droppings (guano) found in your attic, on exterior walls below entry points, or on the ground near the foundation
  • A strong, musty ammonia smell from the attic, especially during hot weather
  • A bat found inside your living space, which indicates a gap connecting the roost to interior rooms
  • Bat bugs (similar to bed bugs) found in bedrooms, especially on upper floors near the attic

Our Process

  1. Free inspection. We inspect the entire exterior of your home at dusk to observe bat flight patterns and identify every entry and exit point. Bats can enter through gaps as small as 3/8 of an inch. We check rooflines, soffits, fascia, gable vents, ridge vents, chimney flashing, and any gap or crack in the building envelope.
  2. Attic inspection. We inspect the attic to assess colony size, guano accumulation, and structural damage. We identify species (big brown bat vs. little brown bat) and check for the presence of bat bugs.
  3. Timing assessment. If the inspection falls within the maternity season (May 1 through August 15), we schedule the exclusion for the earliest safe date. We explain the restriction and why it exists.
  4. One-way device installation. We install one-way exclusion devices at all active entry points. These devices allow bats to exit normally but prevent re-entry. Bats leave at dusk to feed and cannot get back in.
  5. Full building seal. While the one-way devices are in place, we seal every secondary gap, crack, and potential entry point on the entire structure. We use materials that bats cannot chew through: steel mesh, metal flashing, and commercial-grade sealant.
  6. Device removal and final seal. After 5 to 7 days (enough time for all bats to depart), we remove the one-way devices and permanently seal those remaining entry points.
  7. Guano cleanup and remediation. We offer attic remediation to remove accumulated guano, sanitize affected areas, and replace contaminated insulation. Guano accumulation poses a Histoplasmosis risk and should not be disturbed without proper respiratory protection.
  8. Bat bug treatment. If bat bugs are present, we treat the attic and adjacent living spaces. Bat bugs migrate from the roost into bedrooms after the bats are excluded, so proactive treatment is essential.

Treatment Options and Plans

Full bat exclusion. Complete service from inspection through final seal. Includes one-way device installation, full building seal, device removal, and final closure. This is the standard service for any confirmed bat colony.

Bat exclusion with attic remediation. Full exclusion plus complete guano removal, attic sanitization, and insulation replacement. Recommended for any colony that has been present for more than one season, as guano accumulation creates health hazards and attracts secondary pests.

Emergency bat in living space. If a bat enters your living space, we respond to safely capture and remove it. We then inspect to determine how the bat entered and whether a colony is present in the structure. If a colony is confirmed and it is not maternity season, we proceed with full exclusion.

Bat bug treatment (add-on or standalone). Targeted treatment for bat bugs that migrate into living spaces after bats are excluded. Bat bugs look nearly identical to bed bugs and require the same level of thorough treatment.

What to Expect After Exclusion

After one-way devices are installed, you should see reduced bat activity within 2 to 3 nights. Some bats may circle the entry point looking for a way back in. This is normal. They will relocate to an alternative roost within a few days.

After the full exclusion is complete and all entry points are sealed, no bats should be able to re-enter the structure. If you see any bat activity within 30 days of completion, contact us immediately. We warranty our exclusion work.

Bat bug warning: After bats are excluded, bat bugs that lived in the roost with the bats will migrate into your living space looking for a new host. This migration typically happens within 1 to 3 weeks of exclusion. We recommend bat bug treatment as part of the exclusion service to prevent this. If you notice small bugs in bedrooms (especially near the ceiling or in bed frames on upper floors), call us immediately.

Guano odor: If guano remains in the attic after exclusion, the ammonia smell may intensify during hot weather as the attic heats up. Attic remediation eliminates this.

Is Bat Exclusion Safe for Family and Pets?

Yes. Bat exclusion is a physical process (sealing and one-way devices), not a chemical treatment. No pesticides are used on the bats themselves because it is illegal to harm them.

Bat bug treatment, if needed, uses the same safe, targeted products we apply for bed bug treatment. Interior applications dry within 30 to 60 minutes and are safe for family and pets once dry.

The primary health concern with bats is Histoplasmosis, a respiratory infection caused by a fungus that grows in bat guano. Do not disturb accumulated guano yourself. Do not sweep, vacuum, or blow guano without proper respiratory protection (N95 or P100 respirator at minimum). Professional attic remediation handles this safely.

Bats can also carry rabies. Never handle a bat with bare hands. If anyone in your household has been bitten or had direct contact with a bat, contact your physician and local health department immediately.

Why Choose Alpha Pest Solutions?

Legal compliance. All bat species in Oklahoma are federally protected. Killing, trapping, or poisoning bats is illegal. We use only legal one-way exclusion methods that comply with federal and state wildlife regulations.

Maternity season awareness. We never perform exclusion during the maternity window (May 1 through August 15 in Oklahoma). Some companies will exclude during this period, which traps flightless pups inside your attic where they die and create severe odor and secondary pest problems. We schedule responsibly.

Full-structure sealing. We do not just seal the obvious entry points. Bats can enter through gaps as small as 3/8 of an inch, so we inspect and seal the entire building envelope. A partial exclusion is worse than no exclusion because it pushes bats to find new entries, sometimes into your living space.

Evidence-based protocol. We confirm bat presence through observation and physical evidence (guano, staining, sounds) before recommending exclusion. If you hear sounds that turn out to be squirrels or rodents, we tell you honestly and recommend the appropriate service instead.

Small town relational feel. Big company solutions. We are a local Oklahoma City family business that specializes in getting wildlife out of your home safely, legally, and permanently.

Bat Exclusion Throughout the OKC Metro

Bats are found in attics, soffits, and wall voids throughout the Oklahoma City metro. Any home with gaps in the roofline is a potential roost site.

Oklahoma City. Older homes in Heritage Hills, Mesta Park, Crown Heights, and Paseo are particularly vulnerable due to aging soffits and fascia with gaps. Big brown bats are the most common attic species.

Edmond. Established neighborhoods with mature trees near Arcadia Lake see consistent bat activity. Homes with decorative gable vents and ridge vent gaps are common entry points.

Norman. Heavy bat activity near Lake Thunderbird and the Canadian River corridor. Older homes near OU campus with deteriorating rooflines are frequent exclusion sites.

Moore and Midwest City. Post-tornado reconstruction in some areas left gaps in rooflines and soffits that bats have colonized. New construction with unsealed ridge vents also attracts bats.

Nichols Hills and The Village. Large, older homes with complex rooflines provide abundant entry points. Bat colonies in these properties can be substantial due to large attic spaces.

We also serve Yukon, Mustang, Bethany, Del City, Choctaw, Piedmont, and all surrounding communities.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I remove bats from my attic myself?

It is not recommended. All bats in Oklahoma are federally protected, and improper removal methods (trapping, sealing bats inside, using pesticides) are illegal. Effective bat exclusion requires identifying every entry point on the structure, installing one-way devices correctly, and performing a complete building seal. Missing even one entry point allows the colony to persist. Professional exclusion ensures legal compliance and permanent results.

When is the best time for bat exclusion in Oklahoma?

The best windows are early spring (March through April, before maternity season begins May 1) and early fall (mid-August through October, after pups are flying). Exclusion cannot be performed May 1 through August 15 because flightless pups are present. If you discover bats during the maternity window, we inspect and plan immediately but schedule the actual exclusion for the earliest legal date.

How do bats get into my attic?

Bats enter through gaps as small as 3/8 of an inch. Common entry points include: gaps between fascia and soffit boards, unsealed ridge vents, deteriorated soffit panels, gaps around chimney flashing, open gable vents without screening, gaps where utility lines or pipes enter the roofline, and construction gaps in dormers or roof intersections. One-way exclusion followed by a complete building seal closes all of these permanently.

What does bat guano look like?

Bat guano looks similar to mouse droppings but has key differences. Bat droppings are dark brown to black, about the size of a grain of rice, and crumble easily when pressed (because they consist of insect exoskeletons). Mouse droppings are similar in size but are harder and more uniform. Large accumulations of guano have a strong ammonia smell. Do not disturb guano without respiratory protection due to Histoplasmosis risk.

Are bat bugs the same as bed bugs?

Bat bugs and bed bugs are closely related and nearly identical in appearance. The only reliable way to distinguish them is under magnification (bat bugs have longer hairs on their thorax). Bat bugs live in bat roosts and feed on bats, but when bats are excluded, bat bugs migrate into living spaces and will feed on humans. Treatment is the same as for bed bugs. If you have bats in your attic and find bug bites, bat bugs are the likely cause.

Is bat guano dangerous?

Yes. Bat guano can harbor the fungus Histoplasma capsulatum, which causes Histoplasmosis, a respiratory infection. The risk increases when dry guano is disturbed (swept, vacuumed, or blown), which releases fungal spores into the air. Small amounts of fresh guano pose lower risk, but accumulated guano from an established colony should only be removed by professionals wearing proper respiratory protection. Attic remediation after bat exclusion is strongly recommended.

Will bats come back after exclusion?

Not if the exclusion is done correctly. Bats are loyal to their roost site and will attempt to return, which is why every entry point on the entire structure must be sealed, not just the obvious ones. A properly executed full-building seal prevents re-entry permanently. We warranty our exclusion work.

How much does bat exclusion cost?

Cost depends on the size of the structure, the number of entry points, the accessibility of the roofline, and whether attic remediation is needed. Every bat exclusion job is different. Call us at (405) 977-0678 for a free inspection and detailed quote. We assess the full scope before providing a price.

What should I do if I find a bat inside my house?

Close the doors to the room where the bat is, open a window if possible, and call us. Do not attempt to handle the bat with bare hands. If the bat is in a bedroom where someone was sleeping, or if anyone has been bitten or had direct contact with the bat, contact your physician and local health department about rabies exposure. We offer emergency bat removal and can respond same day.

Do bats carry rabies?

A small percentage of bats do carry rabies. The risk is low but real. Never handle a bat with bare hands. If you are bitten or scratched by a bat, or if a bat is found in a room where someone was sleeping (you may not feel a bat bite), seek medical attention immediately. Rabies is nearly always fatal once symptoms appear, but post-exposure prophylaxis is highly effective when administered promptly.
