What Is Bed Bug Control?
Bed bug control is a specialized, multi-visit chemical treatment program designed to eliminate bed bug infestations in homes, apartments, and commercial properties. Bed bugs are blood-feeding parasites that hide in mattress seams, box springs, bed frames, headboards, nightstands, and upholstered furniture. They emerge at night to feed on sleeping occupants, leaving itchy, red welts that often appear in linear or clustered patterns.
Oklahoma’s position as a major travel and logistics corridor, combined with the transient nature of university housing, hotels, and military installations across the OKC metro, makes bed bug infestations a consistent issue. Bed bugs travel through luggage, used furniture, clothing, and shared laundry facilities. They do not discriminate by income level, cleanliness, or housing quality.
Alpha Pest Solutions uses a chemical treatment protocol with residual protection, applied over multiple visits to eliminate all life stages. We require confirmed physical evidence of bed bugs before beginning treatment, because accurate identification is the foundation of effective control.
Signs You Need Bed Bug Control
- Waking up with itchy red welts in linear or clustered patterns on exposed skin, especially arms, shoulders, neck, and face
- Small dark spots (fecal stains) on mattress seams, pillow edges, or sheet corners
- Tiny bloodstains on sheets or pillowcases from crushed bugs after feeding
- Live bed bugs visible in mattress seams, box spring folds, or headboard joints (adults are flat, oval, reddish-brown, about the size of an apple seed)
- Shed skins (translucent exoskeletons) found along mattress piping, behind headboards, or in nightstand drawers
- A sweet, musty odor in the bedroom that was not previously present
- Bed bugs or evidence found in luggage, clothing, or belongings after traveling
- Bites appearing on multiple household members, particularly those sleeping in the same bed or room
- Bed bug evidence spotted during routine inspection of used furniture before bringing it into your home
Our Process
- Evidence-based inspection. We conduct a thorough inspection of the affected room or rooms, checking mattress seams, box springs, bed frames, headboards, nightstands, baseboards, electrical outlets, and upholstered furniture. We require confirmed physical evidence (live bugs, shed skins, fecal spots, or eggs) before recommending treatment. If we cannot confirm bed bugs, we will tell you honestly and help identify what is actually present. Misidentification is common; carpet beetles, bat bugs, bird mites, and other insects are frequently mistaken for bed bugs.
- Preparation guidance. Before treatment, you will receive a detailed preparation checklist. Proper preparation is critical for treatment success. This includes laundering all bedding and clothing in the affected rooms on high heat, reducing clutter, and clearing items away from walls and furniture so we can access all harborage areas.
- First chemical treatment. We apply a combination of residual liquid products, dust formulations, and contact treatments to all identified harborage areas. This includes mattress seams and tufts, box spring folds and staple lines, bed frame joints, headboard attachments, nightstand interiors, baseboards, electrical outlet covers, and any cracks or crevices within 15 feet of sleeping areas. Products are selected for long residual life so they continue killing bed bugs for weeks after application.
- Encasement recommendation. We recommend mattress and box spring encasements after the first treatment. Encasements trap any remaining bugs inside, where they eventually die without feeding, and create a smooth surface that makes future monitoring easier.
- Follow-up treatment (2 weeks). We return approximately 14 days after the initial treatment to inspect, reassess, and apply a second round of treatment. This visit targets nymphs that have hatched from eggs since the first treatment. Bed bug eggs are resistant to many products, so the follow-up visit is essential for breaking the reproductive cycle.
- Confirmation inspection (4 weeks). We return again at approximately 4 weeks to inspect for any remaining activity. If the infestation is eliminated, we confirm completion. If any activity remains, we apply additional treatment at no extra charge.
- Post-treatment monitoring guidance. We provide instructions for ongoing monitoring, including how to check for recurrence and what to watch for in the weeks following treatment completion.
Treatment Options and Plans
Standard residential bed bug treatment. Our multi-visit chemical protocol is the primary treatment option for bed bug infestations in homes and apartments. It includes the initial treatment, a follow-up at 2 weeks, and a confirmation inspection at 4 weeks. This protocol provides residual protection that continues working between visits, kills bed bugs through direct contact and residual exposure, and targets all life stages across multiple treatment cycles.
Why chemical treatment, not heat. Alpha Pest Solutions uses chemical treatment as our standard bed bug protocol for specific, evidence-based reasons:
- Residual protection. Chemical treatments leave a residual barrier that continues killing bed bugs for weeks after application. Heat treatment provides zero residual; any bug that survives or is reintroduced after the heat event has no barrier to overcome.
- Multi-visit accountability. Our protocol includes built-in follow-up visits that target newly hatched nymphs. This systematic approach ensures no life stage is missed.
- Lower cost. Chemical treatment costs significantly less than heat treatment, making professional bed bug elimination accessible to more homeowners.
- Lower property damage risk. Heat treatment requires raising room temperatures to 120 to 140 degrees Fahrenheit for extended periods. This level of sustained heat can damage electronics, warp vinyl flooring and window frames, melt medications, delaminate furniture veneers, and compromise adhesives throughout the room. Insurance claims from heat treatment damage are a known issue in the industry.
- Proven when properly executed. Chemical treatment protocols have decades of documented success. When applied correctly with proper follow-up, chemical treatment achieves full elimination rates comparable to heat, without the associated property risks.
- Heat treatment limitations. Improperly executed heat treatments leave cool spots where bed bugs survive. Heat does not penetrate wall voids, dense clutter, or items insulated from airflow as reliably as operators claim. Survivors repopulate quickly. The equipment required is expensive to operate, which is reflected in the price passed to the customer.
Multi-unit and commercial program. For apartments, hotels, dormitories, and other multi-unit properties, we provide coordinated treatment of affected units and adjacent units where bed bug migration is likely. This program includes inspection of surrounding units, treatment of all confirmed units, and follow-up monitoring.
What to Expect After Treatment
After the first treatment, you may still see live bed bugs for several days. This is normal. Bed bugs that were deep inside wall voids, behind electrical outlets, or in furniture joints will emerge and contact treated surfaces over the following days. They will die after contacting the residual product, but you may see them moving sluggishly before they expire.
Bites may continue for up to a week after the first treatment as remaining bugs feed before dying. If bites continue beyond 10 days, contact us and we will assess the situation before your scheduled follow-up.
After the second treatment at 2 weeks, activity should drop sharply. The second treatment targets nymphs hatched from eggs since the first visit, breaking the reproductive cycle. By the confirmation visit at 4 weeks, we expect to find zero live activity.
Do not apply any over-the-counter bed bug products between our visits. Many consumer products are repellent-based and can scatter bed bugs away from treated areas, reducing the effectiveness of our residual treatment.
Is Bed Bug Control Safe for Family and Pets?
Yes. Our bed bug treatment products are applied to specific harborage areas: mattress seams, cracks, crevices, and void spaces where bed bugs hide. We do not broadcast product across sleeping surfaces, floors, or open areas.
After application, treated surfaces should be allowed to dry completely before resuming normal use, typically 2 to 4 hours. Mattress encasements are installed over the treated mattress, creating a barrier between the product and the sleeper.
Dust formulations are applied inside wall voids and electrical outlets, places that are not accessible to children or pets. Liquid residual products are applied to cracks and crevices at the base of walls, behind furniture, and in areas that are not regular contact surfaces.
If you have infants, pregnant household members, or pets with specific sensitivities, let us know before treatment and we will review all products with you.
Why Choose Alpha Pest Solutions?
Evidence-based treatment protocol. We require confirmed physical evidence of bed bugs before beginning treatment. This protects you from paying for treatment you do not need and ensures we are treating the correct pest. Carpet beetles, bat bugs, bird mites, and even lint or skin irritation are frequently mistaken for bed bugs. We identify before we treat.
Chemical treatment with residual protection. Our multi-visit protocol provides weeks of ongoing protection between visits. Bed bugs that emerge from harborage areas after treatment contact residual product and die. Heat treatment offers no residual protection whatsoever.
Honest assessment and diagnosis. If we inspect and do not find bed bugs, we tell you. We do not sell treatment for a pest that is not present. If we find carpet beetles, bat bugs, or another insect, we identify it correctly and recommend the appropriate response.
Multi-visit follow-through. Our protocol includes a built-in follow-up and confirmation visit. We do not treat once and walk away. We return to verify elimination and treat any newly hatched nymphs that the first visit could not reach.
Small town relational feel. Big company solutions. You get direct communication with your technician, honest answers to your questions, and follow-up that confirms the job is done. Not a service ticket number and a call center.
Bed Bug Control Throughout the OKC Metro
Alpha Pest Solutions provides bed bug treatment across the entire Oklahoma City metropolitan area.
Oklahoma City. Bed bug activity is present across all neighborhoods and housing types. Multi-unit housing in south OKC and central OKC sees the highest frequency, but single-family homes in every part of the city are affected. Travel through Will Rogers World Airport and the high volume of hotels along I-35 and I-40 contribute to ongoing introduction of bed bugs into the metro.
Norman. University of Oklahoma student housing, off-campus apartments, and high-turnover rental properties experience regular bed bug introductions. The movement of students in and out of housing at semester transitions creates seasonal spikes in bed bug reports.
Edmond. Bed bug infestations in Edmond are most commonly associated with travel and used furniture purchases. Single-family homes in all price ranges are affected. The misconception that bed bugs only occur in low-income housing is false; bed bugs follow people, not income levels.
Moore. Residential homes and apartments throughout Moore see bed bug activity. Rapid housing turnover in rental properties increases the risk of encountering an existing infestation when moving into a new unit.
Midwest City. Military housing near Tinker Air Force Base and surrounding apartments experience bed bug introductions through personnel transfers and travel. Multi-unit housing requires coordinated treatment of adjacent units to prevent reinfestation.
Yukon. Bed bug infestations in Yukon are typically introduced through travel or secondhand furniture. Early detection and prompt treatment prevent small problems from becoming severe infestations.
Mustang and Del City. Growing residential areas with a mix of new and older housing stock. Bed bug activity follows the same travel and introduction patterns seen across the metro. Early inspection at the first sign of bites prevents costly full-room infestations.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if I have bed bugs or something else?
Accurate identification requires physical evidence. Bed bugs leave specific signs: dark fecal spots on mattress seams, shed skins along piping and tufts, and live bugs in characteristic hiding spots. Many people assume they have bed bugs based on bites alone, but carpet beetles, bat bugs, bird mites, fleas, and even dry skin conditions can produce similar symptoms. Alpha Pest Solutions inspects for physical evidence before recommending any treatment. If we find something other than bed bugs, we tell you what it is and recommend the correct response.
Why do you require physical evidence before treating?
Treating for bed bugs without confirmed evidence wastes money and can mask the actual problem. If bites are caused by bird mites from an old nest in the attic, bat bugs from a bat colony in the wall, or carpet beetles in stored clothing, bed bug treatment will not resolve the issue. Evidence-based diagnosis ensures you receive the correct treatment for the correct pest. This approach also protects customers from paying for unnecessary services based on assumption alone.
Why chemical treatment instead of heat treatment?
Chemical treatment provides residual protection that continues killing bed bugs for weeks between visits. Heat treatment provides zero residual; the moment temperatures drop, any surviving bug can resume normal activity. Heat also carries property damage risks including warped vinyl, damaged electronics, melted medications, and delaminated furniture. Chemical treatment costs less, poses no property damage risk, and achieves equivalent elimination rates when applied correctly with proper follow-up visits.
How many treatments does it take to eliminate bed bugs?
Our standard protocol includes an initial treatment, a follow-up at 2 weeks, and a confirmation inspection at 4 weeks. Most infestations are eliminated within this timeframe. Severe infestations or situations with preparation challenges may require an additional treatment cycle. We continue treating until the infestation is confirmed eliminated.
Can I treat bed bugs myself with store-bought products?
Consumer bed bug products are generally ineffective against established infestations. Most over-the-counter sprays and foggers use repellent chemicals that scatter bed bugs into walls, adjacent rooms, and deeper harborage areas without killing the colony. This makes the infestation worse and harder to treat professionally. Professional-grade residual products, applied to specific harborage areas by a trained technician, are far more effective than any consumer product available.
How do bed bugs get into my home?
Bed bugs are hitchhikers. They travel in luggage, clothing, purses, backpacks, used furniture, and any item that has been in an infested location. Common introduction points include hotel stays, visiting infested homes, purchasing used furniture or mattresses, shared laundry facilities, and moving into a previously infested rental unit. Bed bugs do not come from outside, do not fly, and are not attracted by filth. They follow people.
What do I need to do to prepare for treatment?
We provide a detailed preparation checklist when scheduling your treatment. Key steps include laundering all bedding, sheets, pillowcases, and clothing from affected rooms on the highest heat setting and drying on high heat for at least 30 minutes. Remove clutter from floors and around beds. Pull furniture away from walls. Empty nightstand drawers. Vacuum thoroughly and dispose of the vacuum bag in a sealed outdoor trash container. Proper preparation is critical for treatment success.
How long after treatment can I sleep in my bed?
You can sleep in your bed the same night after treated surfaces have dried, typically 2 to 4 hours. In fact, we recommend continuing to sleep in the treated room. Sleeping in another room or on the couch can cause bed bugs to follow you, spreading the infestation to new areas of the home. Sleeping in the treated room keeps bed bugs in contact with treated surfaces.
Do bed bugs only live in mattresses?
No. While mattresses and box springs are primary harborage sites, bed bugs also hide in headboard joints, nightstand drawers, baseboards, electrical outlet covers, picture frame backs, curtain rod brackets, upholstered furniture seams, and any crack or crevice within 15 feet of a sleeping area. In severe infestations, they spread to adjacent rooms. Our treatment addresses all of these harborage areas, not just the mattress.
Are bed bug bites dangerous?
Bed bug bites are not known to transmit diseases. However, they cause significant discomfort, itching, and sleep disruption. Some people develop allergic reactions ranging from mild swelling to severe welts. Secondary infections can occur from scratching. The psychological impact of a bed bug infestation, including anxiety, insomnia, and hypervigilance, is well documented and should not be underestimated.
Can bed bugs come back after treatment?
A properly completed treatment eliminates the existing infestation. However, bed bugs can be reintroduced through the same pathways that brought them in originally: travel, visitors, used items, or shared walls in multi-unit housing. After treatment, we provide monitoring guidance and prevention recommendations to reduce the risk of reintroduction. Early detection of any new introduction makes retreatment simpler and less costly.
How much does bed bug treatment cost?
Cost depends on the number of rooms affected, the severity of the infestation, and the property type. We provide a specific quote after the free inspection. Our chemical treatment protocol is significantly less expensive than heat treatment while providing equivalent results and residual protection that heat cannot offer.
