What Is Wasp and Stinging Insect Control?

Wasp and stinging insect control is the identification, treatment, and removal of wasp nests and stinging insect colonies from homes and businesses. In Oklahoma City, the primary stinging insects requiring professional control are yellowjackets (ground and wall void nesters that are highly aggressive), paper wasps (open comb nests under eaves and porches), bald-faced hornets (large aerial paper nests), mud daubers (solitary tube nests on walls and ceilings), and cicada killers (large solitary wasps that burrow in yards).

Stinging insects are among the most dangerous pests we deal with because of the risk of anaphylactic reactions. According to the CDC, stinging insects cause more than 60 deaths per year in the United States. Even for people without allergies, a yellowjacket ground nest disturbed during yard work or a paper wasp nest above a doorway creates a genuine safety hazard. Alpha Pest Solutions removes active nests safely and treats the area to prevent rebuilding.

Signs You Need Stinging Insect Control

  • Wasps seen flying in and out of a hole in the ground (yellowjackets)
  • Wasps entering and exiting a gap in your siding, soffit, or wall (yellowjackets in wall voids)
  • Open, umbrella-shaped paper nests under eaves, porch ceilings, deck railings, or playground equipment (paper wasps)
  • A large, gray, football-shaped paper nest hanging from a tree branch, eave, or building overhang (bald-faced hornets)
  • Tube-shaped mud nests on exterior walls, garage ceilings, or under covered structures (mud daubers)
  • Large wasps (1.5 inches or more) hovering low over your yard and burrowing into soil (cicada killers)
  • Aggressive wasp behavior near doorways, porches, or outdoor dining areas
  • Someone in your household has been stung, especially multiple times or near a nest
  • Wasps nesting near high-traffic areas: doorways, pool areas, play equipment, outdoor seating

Our Process

  1. Free inspection. We identify the species, locate all nests, and assess the safety risk. Species identification matters because treatment approach varies: yellowjacket ground nests require subsurface treatment, paper wasp nests require direct nest treatment, and bald-faced hornet nests require specialized equipment due to their extreme aggression.
  2. Nest treatment. We treat the nest directly with products that eliminate the colony. For ground-nesting yellowjackets, we apply treatment into the entry hole and seal it. For aerial nests (paper wasps, bald-faced hornets), we treat the nest and remove it once the colony is eliminated. For wall void nests, we treat through the entry point and into the void.
  3. Nest removal. After treatment, we remove accessible nests. Paper wasp nests under eaves, porch ceilings, and deck structures are removed completely. Bald-faced hornet nests are removed if accessible. Yellowjacket ground nests are treated and sealed.
  4. Prevention treatment. We apply residual treatment to eaves, soffits, porch ceilings, and other areas where wasps commonly build nests. This deters new nest construction for the remainder of the season.
  5. Entry point sealing. For yellowjackets that have nested in wall voids, we seal the entry point after treatment to prevent other insects from using the same gap.
  6. Follow-up. We check that the nest is fully eliminated and no new nests have been built nearby. If new nests appear within the warranty period, we treat at no additional charge.

Treatment Options and Plans

One-time nest removal. Direct treatment and removal of one or more active nests. Includes inspection, species identification, treatment, nest removal, and follow-up. This is the most common stinging insect service.

Quarterly general pest plan. Covers wasps along with ants, spiders, roaches, and 20+ other pests. Each quarterly visit includes inspection of common nesting areas and preventive treatment to deter new nest construction. This plan prevents most wasp problems before they develop.

Commercial stinging insect management. For restaurants with outdoor seating, schools, daycare facilities, pools, parks, and commercial properties where stinging insects create liability and safety concerns. Includes scheduled inspections, preventive treatment, rapid response for new nests, and documentation.

Emergency nest removal. Same-day response for nests in high-risk locations: doorways, play areas, pool decks, school properties, and situations where someone has already been stung.

What to Expect After Treatment

After a wasp nest is treated, activity at the nest drops dramatically within 1 to 2 hours. Some returning foragers may circle the nest site for 24 to 48 hours. They will not rebuild at the treated location.

For yellowjacket ground nests, the sealed entry point should show no further activity within 24 hours. If you see wasps digging a new entry hole near the treated one, contact us.

For paper wasp nests that are removed, the bare mounting point may attract wasps looking to rebuild. Our preventive treatment deters this, but if you see early nest construction at the same spot, call us for retreatment.

Bald-faced hornet nests are typically a one-time seasonal problem. The nest is used for one season only and is not reused. However, new queens from the old colony may build new nests nearby the following spring.

Is Stinging Insect Control Safe for Family and Pets?

Yes. We apply treatment directly to nests and nesting areas, not broadly across your property. Interior applications (for wall void yellowjacket nests) use targeted products applied through the entry point.

We recommend keeping children and pets away from the treatment area until work is complete. For ground nest treatments, we mark the treated area and recommend staying away for 24 hours while the colony is fully eliminated.

Preventive treatments applied to eaves, soffits, and porch ceilings are dry within 30 to 60 minutes and safe after drying.

If anyone in your household has a known allergy to stinging insects, let us know during scheduling. We prioritize these calls and can coordinate timing to ensure the area is safe before family members are present.

Why Choose Alpha Pest Solutions?

Species-specific approach. Yellowjackets in the ground require different treatment than paper wasps under your eaves or bald-faced hornets 30 feet up in a tree. We identify the species, assess the nest location, and use the right equipment and products for the situation.

Safety first. Stinging insect work is inherently dangerous. We use professional protective equipment and have experience handling aggressive species like yellowjackets and bald-faced hornets. We do not recommend homeowners attempt nest removal themselves, especially for ground nests and large aerial nests.

Evidence-based protocol. If your “wasp problem” turns out to be mud daubers (which are solitary, rarely sting, and actually help control spider populations), we tell you that and recommend whether treatment is necessary. We do not treat problems that do not need treating.

Same-day emergency response. A yellowjacket ground nest near your back door is a safety emergency. A paper wasp nest above a school entrance needs immediate attention. We offer same-day response for urgent stinging insect situations.

Small town relational feel. Big company solutions. Your local pest control team, not a corporate call center.

Stinging Insect Control Throughout the OKC Metro

Wasp and stinging insect activity in the OKC metro runs from April through October, with peak nest building in May through July and peak colony size (and aggression) in August through September.

Oklahoma City. Paper wasps under eaves and on porches throughout all neighborhoods. Yellowjacket ground nests in yards, especially in sandy or loose soil areas. Bald-faced hornet nests in trees and on building overhangs in established neighborhoods with mature trees.

Edmond. Cicada killers in well-maintained lawns create alarming but mostly harmless burrows in summer. Paper wasp nests on every porch and eave. Mud dauber nests in garages and covered parking.

Norman. Heavy paper wasp pressure on older homes and structures near OU campus. Yellowjacket nests in retaining walls and landscaping. Bald-faced hornets in wooded areas near Lake Thunderbird.

Moore. Paper wasps and yellowjackets are the primary complaints. Ground nests in newly developed subdivisions where loose fill soil makes ideal yellowjacket nesting habitat.

Commercial properties. Restaurants with outdoor dining, schools, daycares, pool facilities, and parks across the metro require proactive stinging insect management from spring through fall.

We serve all OKC metro cities including Yukon, Mustang, Bethany, Del City, Choctaw, Midwest City, Nichols Hills, The Village, and Piedmont.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if I have yellowjackets or paper wasps?

Yellowjackets are about half an inch long, bright yellow and black, and extremely aggressive when their nest is disturbed. They typically nest underground or in wall voids. Paper wasps are slightly larger, more slender, and reddish-brown to dark brown with yellow markings. They build visible, open-comb umbrella-shaped nests under eaves and overhangs. The key difference is nest location: if wasps are entering the ground or a wall, they are almost certainly yellowjackets. If the nest is visible and open-faced, they are paper wasps.

Are yellowjacket stings dangerous?

Yes. Yellowjacket stings are painful and can cause severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis) in sensitive individuals. Unlike honey bees, yellowjackets can sting multiple times. A disturbed yellowjacket nest can release hundreds of aggressive workers simultaneously. If you have a known allergy to stinging insects, carry an EpiPen and call a professional immediately. Even without allergies, multiple stings can cause dangerous reactions, especially in children and elderly adults.

Can I treat a wasp nest with spray from the hardware store?

Over-the-counter wasp sprays can knock down a small, visible paper wasp nest in an accessible location. However, they are ineffective and dangerous for yellowjacket ground nests (which contain hundreds to thousands of wasps), wall void nests (which are unreachable from outside), and large bald-faced hornet nests (which trigger massive defensive responses). Professional treatment is safer and more effective for anything beyond a small, accessible paper wasp nest.

What should I do if I disturb a ground nest?

Move away from the area as quickly as possible. Yellowjackets will pursue for 50 to 100 feet or more. Do not swat at them. Once you are a safe distance away, watch the area to confirm the nest location. Do not return to the area. Call us for same-day treatment. Mark the general area if possible to prevent others from approaching.

Are mud daubers dangerous?

Mud daubers are solitary wasps that build tube-shaped mud nests on walls and ceilings. They are not aggressive and very rarely sting. Their nests contain paralyzed spiders (their food source for larvae) and are largely harmless. We can remove mud dauber nests for aesthetic reasons, but they do not require the urgent treatment that yellowjackets or paper wasps do. Consider leaving them if they are in a low-traffic area, as they help control spider populations.

When is the worst time of year for wasp stings in Oklahoma?

Late summer (August through September) is the peak danger period. By this time, colonies have reached maximum size (yellowjacket nests can contain several thousand workers), food sources are declining, and wasps become significantly more aggressive in defending their nest and searching for food. Wasp encounters at outdoor events, around trash cans, and near sweet beverages are most common during this period.

Do wasps come back to the same nest site?

Paper wasps and yellowjackets do not reuse old nests. However, they may build new nests at the same location if conditions are favorable. Queens that overwinter nearby can establish new nests on the same eave, in the same ground area, or in the same wall void the following spring. Preventive treatment of common nesting areas in early spring helps deter this.

Can yellowjackets nest inside my walls?

Yes. Yellowjackets commonly build nests inside wall voids, entering through small gaps in siding, weep holes in brick, or gaps around utility penetrations. Wall void nests are among the most difficult to treat because the nest is enclosed and inaccessible from outside. Professional treatment through the entry point with dusts or liquid formulations is required. Never seal a wall void entry while a yellowjacket colony is active inside, as they will chew through drywall into your living space.

How fast can you remove a wasp nest?

Most nest treatments and removals are completed in a single visit, typically within 1 to 2 hours. Same-day response is available for emergency situations. Call (405) 977-0678 and let us know the urgency. Nests near doorways, play areas, and school properties are treated as priority calls.

What are cicada killers and are they dangerous?

Cicada killers are very large wasps (up to 2 inches long) that burrow into soil to build individual nesting chambers. Despite their intimidating size, they are solitary wasps with low aggression toward humans. Males cannot sting at all, and females sting only when directly handled. They are primarily a nuisance in lawns where their burrows create unsightly mounds. Treatment is available but not always necessary. We assess the situation and give you an honest recommendation.
